Description
They didn't want to be water any longer- they admired the night sky, the stars, and the universe beyond. She would grant them their need, but it's a lot to ask, for creatures that used to be oil. Please see the bigger version! The size restrictions here don't do it justice
This picture is based on Oil by
I've tried to stay true to the original characters, trying to keep the same look to the creatures, and keep the stretch-limbed, spiky hair girl looking pretty well the same as the original.
I started this picture back in January this year, and after abandoning it many times, and slowly chipping away at it in my spare time, I would love to finally put this picture to bed. I tried a lot of new things with this painting. I typically rely heavily on multiple layers, but only used one in this painting. It's the first time I've painted water, the first time I've "painted" stars, and many more things. It was a time for experimentation. And there are a lot of things I will be sure to avoid in future.
Painted exclusively into Photoshop with my Wacom Intuos 6x8. Very minor references used, to get an idea of the look of water, and for the face (used a mirror on my desk).
As always, I GREATLY appreciate any critiques that head my way- I am not easily offended. Make use of that review function!

Pros:The concept is very very good. I like that the theme is still consistent. I remember that Oil one you did very well. The little guys are still cute and they give a whimsical feel to the image which I always love. They are my favorite part of this because they have so much personality and are all very different. It is a lot of fun to look at each one. The water is very well done, and so is the girl. I really like the design of her character. I love that skull that suprises you from the background. The colors are really beautifully chosen and applied as well.
Cons:I am not that great at anatomy myself, so I won't say too much. Over all she has a strong figure, but her hand (near the red blobby) seems a bit strange.
Overall opinion/feedback:Overall I really like this. It is a successful painting especially since it makes me want to know more about the story you are telling!

Thanks Rian ^_^ In the original picture, she had 4 fingers and a thumb, though all the digits were proportionally long. I decided to give her a slightly more alien feel in this picture by giving her only 3 fingers and a thumb on each hand, but I think I'll have to learn more about hand anatomy to be able to pull this off better.
Brett, you deserve a HUGE thank you! I don't think this piece would have reached this stage if it wasn't for all your critiques on the work in progress- words of wisdom ^_^ If I'd followed more of your advice, it would look better than it does, but I'm sick to death of this picture Lol. All the advice has been going towards my next picture though
If you feel up to it, I think a critique from you would be great, if just to show others what you saw. thanks again Brett

i can see how Water goddes can transform oil to water, but in that case, don't you think that a goddes of Universe should be the one to transform these creatures into stars?
also, her lags look a bit out of proportion with the rest of the body... and the position looks a little uncomfortable, imagine yourself sitting the way she has to in this painting

I recognized the skull only after reading about it in the comments. Looks cool, but I have no idea why it is there.

My intention with the skull was my little attempt to give a sense of doom to the picture. It's all well and fine for them to turn into the universe (how fantastic!), but I tried to indicate to the viewer that the result of this wouldn't be so great, that they're pushing things too far. This isn't very clear though, I'll have to work on that. ^_^
That's a very flattering comment you made Peter, thank you very much!
Thank you all again for the critiques- sorry I haven't commented on them all, but believe me, I've paid attention to them. I really appreciate it. ^_^
