Description

They didn't want to be water any longer- they admired the night sky, the stars, and the universe beyond. She would grant them their need, but it's a lot to ask, for creatures that used to be oil.

Please see the bigger version! The size restrictions here don't do it justice

This picture is based on Oil by GFXartist sponsor CityRose

I've tried to stay true to the original characters, trying to keep the same look to the creatures, and keep the stretch-limbed, spiky hair girl looking pretty well the same as the original.

I started this picture back in January this year, and after abandoning it many times, and slowly chipping away at it in my spare time, I would love to finally put this picture to bed. I tried a lot of new things with this painting. I typically rely heavily on multiple layers, but only used one in this painting. It's the first time I've painted water, the first time I've "painted" stars, and many more things. It was a time for experimentation. And there are a lot of things I will be sure to avoid in future. :p I have lots to say about what I do and don't like about this pic, but I don't want to taint your critiques :p

Painted exclusively into Photoshop with my Wacom Intuos 6x8. Very minor references used, to get an idea of the look of water, and for the face (used a mirror on my desk).

As always, I GREATLY appreciate any critiques that head my way- I am not easily offended. Make use of that review function! ;)

The eyes of the little freaks could use more shading... compared to the rest, they look cartoonish (like a droopy cartoon, lol).I like the rest, though :)

That skull in the sky is a great touch, I didn't see that at first. The water is good as well, the creatures don't fit too well though. Good image:)

I've been looking at this in your blog for quite some time, and Im so happy to see the whole deal, very impresive you did a fantastic job on the water. And the seams of the fabric looks fantastic on the larger version almost real in appearance. I dont know if the fingers are drawn to prortion or longer, but the seem a tad off. And the right hand looks like it only has three fingers. But this is an awesome painting a huge leap in skill from your last one, which i think you took down because it isnt in you gallery no more. Anywyas, well done and Im glad to see it done!

Ha those little creatures are great. Love teh water and like the colour of your sky also. Agree that the fingers look long but not sure if its intentional. Good work!

Thanks for the comments peoples! ^_^ It's good to know what works and what doesn't. ;)

Thanks Rian ^_^ In the original picture, she had 4 fingers and a thumb, though all the digits were proportionally long. I decided to give her a slightly more alien feel in this picture by giving her only 3 fingers and a thumb on each hand, but I think I'll have to learn more about hand anatomy to be able to pull this off better.

Brett, you deserve a HUGE thank you! I don't think this piece would have reached this stage if it wasn't for all your critiques on the work in progress- words of wisdom ^_^ If I'd followed more of your advice, it would look better than it does, but I'm sick to death of this picture Lol. All the advice has been going towards my next picture though ;)
If you feel up to it, I think a critique from you would be great, if just to show others what you saw. thanks again Brett

Setting of a dark night with waves crashing into her and into itself. Creatures with in water reach outward looking towards her for help as they are tossed about by these powerful waves. Some of the creatures at peak of wave mimick the fluid movement that is water in a smooth, natural manner. Her pose is well done as she glares slightly towards viewer. Although her pose is good in terms realism it doesn't fit in with rest of image. She seems to sit near surface of water with out any sort of support beneath her (ex. rocks or sand), which gives the impression that she can float. Additional waves in distance off to viewers' right could inhance the overall feeling of depth. Green used as a ray of light seems to hail from way off in the distance, since it barely affects the clouds hovering over head. To bring it forward in image the lighting from it would need to have more influence in the clouds and some in waves populated in distance. Skull in ray of light adds a foreboading overtone to that region of the scene.

this is a great work, but....

i can see how Water goddes can transform oil to water, but in that case, don't you think that a goddes of Universe should be the one to transform these creatures into stars?
also, her lags look a bit out of proportion with the rest of the body... and the position looks a little uncomfortable, imagine yourself sitting the way she has to in this painting :)

wo do you remember a year ago? i remember commenting on your work a year ago, and looking at this, and then back at those....wow, it took you what, 10 months to get to where you wanted to be....thats kind of dramatic...

i love this piece, the water has a sort of asian look, and the little creatures are spooky/cute...nice affect, plus your colors are just amazing

Thank you so much everyone for the lovely comments and all those great critiques ^___^ As I've said, it's good to know what has worked in this picture and what hasn't; it helps me a great deal when it comes to creating my next piece. ;)

My intention with the skull was my little attempt to give a sense of doom to the picture. It's all well and fine for them to turn into the universe (how fantastic!), but I tried to indicate to the viewer that the result of this wouldn't be so great, that they're pushing things too far. This isn't very clear though, I'll have to work on that. ^_^

That's a very flattering comment you made Peter, thank you very much! It took much longer to reach this stage actually- it's just that my 'progress' wasn't documented in completed pictures. I still have a long way to go though. ;)

Thank you all again for the critiques- sorry I haven't commented on them all, but believe me, I've paid attention to them. I really appreciate it. ^_^

Concept:

Technical Skill:

Impact/impression:

Strong
Pros:
The concept is very very good. I like that the theme is still consistent. I remember that Oil one you did very well. The little guys are still cute and they give a whimsical feel to the image which I always love. They are my favorite part of this because they have so much personality and are all very different. It is a lot of fun to look at each one. The water is very well done, and so is the girl. I really like the design of her character. I love that skull that suprises you from the background. The colors are really beautifully chosen and applied as well.
Cons:
I am not that great at anatomy myself, so I won't say too much. Over all she has a strong figure, but her hand (near the red blobby) seems a bit strange.
Overall opinion/feedback:
Overall I really like this. It is a successful painting especially since it makes me want to know more about the story you are telling!
